Mount Kilimanjaro Trek (Machame Route - 7 Days)
Day One: Arrival and Preparation
Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly greeted by your host who will transfer you to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. After settling in, you'll have a mountain climbing briefing and equipment inspection to ensure you are well-prepared for the adventure ahead.
Day Two: Starting the Ascent
After breakfast, the journey begins. You'll drive to the Machame Park gate, the starting point for your trek. The trail takes you through the original montane forest, adorned with unique flora like busy lizzie flowers and ferns. Your first camp awaits amidst the giant heather at 3,000 meters. It's an ascent of 1,200 meters and a 5-6 hour walk.
Day Three: Into the Heath Zone
The trek continues as you emerge from the giant heather zone, hiking through open moorland. You'll reach Shira Cave at 3,840 meters, where you may encounter herds of eland and fascinating geological features. This day involves an ascent of 840 meters and 4-5 hours of walking.
Day Four: The Challenge of Barranco Wall
Today's trek leads you towards the main peak, Kibo. The imposing western glaciers come into view as you navigate volcanic rocks and boulders. Descending into the Barranco Valley, you'll reach Barranco Camp at 3,950 meters. This day involves 6-7 hours of walking and only a 110-meter ascent. Climbing higher and then descending aids acclimatization.
Day Five: Barafu Camp and Summit Preparations
You'll ascend the steep Barranco Wall, with some easy scrambling sections, and then descend to the Karanga Valley for lunch. Afterward, you'll hike to Barafu Hut at 4,600 meters, which offers fantastic views. This is a challenging day with 7-8 hours of hiking and an ascent of 650 meters. Barafu Camp is your base camp for the summit attempt.
Day Six: Summit Day and Descent
This is the big day. Just after midnight, the summit trek begins. You'll climb through challenging terrain, including a gap between the Rebman and Ratzel glaciers, and arrive at Stella Point. From there, you proceed to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After enjoying the breathtaking views and signing the summit book, you'll descend to Mweka Campsite for dinner and a well-deserved rest.
Day Seven: Descent and Departure
After breakfast, you'll descend through the forest to the Mweka Gate, where you'll collect your certificates. Your driver will meet you, and you'll return to Moshi or Arusha. You can spend a leisurely evening reflecting on your incredible achievement or prepare for further adventures.
