The Chimpanzee Sanctuary & Wildlife Conservation Trust, a project supported by the Jane Goodall Institute, warmly welcomes you to Ngamba Island on Lake Victoria. This island serves as a safe haven for orphaned chimpanzees, some of which have been rescued from as far away as Congo. Not only does your visit provide you with a unique opportunity to get close to these incredible creatures, but it also contributes to the well-being of the orphaned chimps. It's fascinating to note that chimpanzees share a remarkable 98.4% of their genes with human beings. During your visit, you'll have the incredible chance to witness the daily care and activities of 52 chimpanzees living in this sanctuary. These chimps enjoy a vast 95-acre forest to roam freely. You'll discover their dietary preferences, meet the dedicated team responsible for their care, and observe chimpanzee social behaviors up close from specially constructed raised viewing platforms overlooking the lush forest. Additionally, your visit will provide insights into the broader efforts of chimpanzee conservation in the wild and the significant threats they face, such as habitat encroachment, poaching, and the illegal pet trade. Your adventure begins early in the morning as you depart for Chimp Island in Entebbe by 7 AM. Upon reaching the Chimp Island meeting point at the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre, you'll embark on your journey at 9 AM. The island is a scenic 40 to 60-minute boat ride from Entebbe pier, taking you across the equator line and passing by charming fishing islands along the way. Ngamba Island offers a unique opportunity to get remarkably close to the chimpanzees. Specially constructed raised platforms allow you to approach within feet of the chimps during their feeding times, which occur at 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. After a delightful day, you'll return overland following lunch, where your driver/guide will be ready to receive you.
